Location | Silver Spring, Maryland United States map
Vehicle | 1974 Porsche 914
Motor | Prestolite MTC4001 Series Wound DC Advanced 7 degrees for better high speed efficiency to use 2 gears 2 & 3 up to 65mph
Drivetrain | 5 speed with typical rubbery shifting. Brakes could be better, may upgrade to a 914-6 or 911
Controller | Curtis PMC 25 400A needed 150uH of additional choke in series with motor with bypass contactor around both and engage contactor which closes on each peddle press for safety requirements.
Batteries | 16 Saft STM5-180, 6.00 Volt, Nickel-Cadmium, Flooded Battery Scanner displays all battery voltages simultaneously. Mark built in a watering system that connects all batteries. Nifty. Full charge voltage is around 108 v.
System Voltage | 96 Volts
Charger | Lester Modified Golf Cart Ferro resonant set to push-pull and fan added to charge to 138V for 1.73V per cell at 7.5A Saft spec. When .01V per cell per hour (2 hours match then stop).
Heater | Holmes | ||||||
DC/DC Converter | VP-12124 Modified from www.valcom.com through Graybar electric supplier design I did, output set to 14V. Also backup dc converter (48V tap) set to 13.5V incase the main one isn't feeling well
Instrumentation | charger display, battery scanner, batt temp, battery amps, volts
Top Speed | 80 MPH (128 KPH) 60hp peak, 25hp continuous. HP on the freeway, just multiply the amps (150) x the volts (120) = 18K. For no losses you'd divide by 750 (24 hp) but in reality it works out to about 1kw per hp with losses so that's about 18hp going down the freeway.
Range | 35 Miles (56 Kilometers) That's if you are taking it easy.
Watt Hours/Mile | 450 Wh/Mile AC measured at line (proper way to measure)
EV Miles |
| ||||||
Seating Capacity | 2 adults
Curb Weight | 2,820 Pounds (1,281 Kilograms) Start was about 2000 pounds
Tires | stock pumped to 45psi
Conversion Time | 600 hours
Conversion Cost | $10k | ||||||
Additional Features | Electric Porsche 914 with 16ea STM5-180 6V Ni-Cads (Saft) 96V Prestolite MTC4001 motor, Curtis PMC 25 (2kHz to scare away animals & eliminate road kill). Has my VP-12124 DC converter I designed for Valcom and charger using dv/dt=0 algorithm. MIG welded chassis on, best kit from Brad Mayuer 309-694-1797 and Porsche parts. Did complete restoration, 600 hours including conversion about $10k total, Mark 540-473-1248. Now owned by Charlie Garlow 202-564-1088 who got a steal of a deal from Mark, great guy. |
